artistic statement of Yung-Shan Tsou

Taking inspiration from trivial everyday objects Yung-Shan Tsou develops  unique material semiotics. Tsou terms this particular artistic form “Aufzeichnungen” (Notes). Tsou’s works are characterized by the dialogues between image and language; between content and the process of writing. Tsou investigates the direct relations between the fine skilled way of writing and script.

Tsou’s works are mainly presented in the form of books, encouraging the reader to maintain the conventional reading posture whilst inviting them to focus on the tensions between material and script and the relationship between the work and the viewer. By design, this in turn affects the viewer's perception of the work. The viewer(, or reader) can hold the book, allowing intimate interactions with the artistic works.

Through experimentation with a diverse range of techniques and materials, Tsou opens up possibilities for the viewer to evoke changes in perspectives.  The works move out beyond mere “artist's books” until they themselves have specific qualities as objects. If one draws their attention to the body of Tsou’s work, it can be noted that the boundary between foreground and background is often blurred, hence Tsou combines her work in book form to highlight this duality.

In conjunction with Tsou’s exploration of the relationships between imagery and language, Tsou incorporates the influence of multicultural perspectives. Tsou considers the communication with different languages (, expressions) and searches for how perceptions could be built by reading a picture or by observing the imagery of a script. Tsou’s book-objects and reading installations muse at the subtle boundary between reading and observing.

In Tsou’s project “Zusammenhang” (Relationship) she devotes herself to the possibility of representing reading itself. The representations are revealed with the changing imagery of the read-book; with the gesture of the reader and the very act of reading. Tsou’s  “Notes” are expanded into different mediums, such as book-objects and videos. Through this transformation between mediums, the differing synesthetic experiences of reading are unfolded and exposed.
